THE CRUSADES
The crusades were a series of military campaigns in the middle ages. They were ordered by the popes to win back the holy land or the area known as present day Israel the city they wanted to take back was Jerusalem. The crusades took place from 1096-1270 A.D. (C.E.) most of the battles were fought in the deserts next to jerusalem. All the crusades were instruced by the Pope's. the crusades were caused by Seljuk Terks (sell-u-lek Ter-ks) threating to conquer the Byzantine Empire. Also Christans pilgrams complaned of being persecuted by Muslams in Palestine.
In 1095 A.D. (C.E.) Pope Urban II told all christians in Europe to joinhis army and win back the Holy Land (Jeruslalem). During this time it was in controll by the Muslims. The first crusade was lead by a monk named Peter the Hermit during 1096-1099 A.D. (C.E.). Peter had never had any military experience. his army suffered from heat and lack of food. when he got to Jerusalem he slotered the inhabidits living there.
The scoend crusade didn't have much of an impact it was just to mantain controll of the holy land. There was a childrens crusade and they were brutily slotered. Everything after the third crusade was to gain back the holy land from Salidan.
The third crusade happend when Saladin a Muslim leader conquered the holy land back. So King Richard of England, king Philip II of France, and Frederck Barbarossa of the Holy Roman empire went to take it back. on there way to take the holy land back again Philip turend his army arownd and took advantage that the English army wasn't in England. During this time Richard was in the holy land and created a truce with Saladin.
The fourth crusade was conducted by Pope Innocent. The Cruseders never reached the holy land, instaded they stoped at Constantinople then slatered the Christian residences just to loot the city they were alied with. Pope Innocent was outraged with what they did so he banished the crusaders from the church and Constantinople created the Eastern Orthodox Church.
There were many results of the crusades. Europe got more trade with different countreys and were able to start to bring them selfs out of the hole they brought thenself into. schools started to open and Math, Art, Music, Science. during this time the black plague was spreading and wiped out 1/3 of Europes population.
